How to permanently stop mold behind wardrobe in humid villa?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Mirdif has been feeling extra humid ever since the weather started changing a few weeks ago. I just pulled out the guest room's wardrobe from the wall and was horrified to find a patch of black, speckled mold growing on the back of it and the wall behind. We run the AC constantly but it's clearly not enough. What's the most effective way to clean this and, more importantly, how can I stop it from coming back for good?

The black mold behind your wardrobe is a classic symptom of high humidity and condensation, a very common issue in Mirdif villas, especially during seasonal shifts. The wall behind furniture becomes a cold spot where moisture from the humid air condenses, creating the perfect environment for mold.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For a small patch, scrub the wall and wardrobe with a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous materials like drywall. Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after cleaning.

To stop it permanently, you must control the humidity and air flow. Simply running the AC isn't always sufficient if air is stagnant. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow air to circulate behind it. Use a portable dehumidifier in that room, aiming to keep relative humidity below 60%. Check for and seal any hidden leaks from pipes or windows that could be adding moisture.

In many Dubai villas, the root cause is often a poorly insulated external wall. The wall gets cold from the AC, and the warm, humid air condenses on it. This may require professional assessment to diagnose properly. If the mold covers more than a square meter, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a certified mold inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to identify the exact condensation points and advise on remediation, which may include improving wall insulation or adjusting your AC system's balance.
