How to permanently stop mold in a steamy bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in my Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, and I just found black spots growing along the grout between the wall tiles. It's the bathroom my kids use, and they take long, hot showers, so the room gets super steamy and the mirror is always fogged up. I wipe down the surfaces but it keeps coming back. What's the most effective way to stop this mold from growing back for good?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is a persistent issue due to our high humidity and the condensation from hot showers. The steam from your kids' showers provides the perfect damp environment for mold spores, which are always present in the air, to colonize. Simply wiping surfaces addresses the visible growth but not the underlying moisture problem.
To stop it from returning, you must control humidity. Run the exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If your fan is weak or you don't have one, opening the bathroom window is essential. Wipe down all wet surfaces—tiles, glass, faucets—with a squeegee after use. This single habit is the most effective way to remove the moisture mold needs to grow. For the existing mold on grout, scrub it with a dedicated grout brush and a paste of baking soda and water or a diluted vinegar solution. Avoid bleach; it only lightens the color temporarily and does not kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout. If the mold returns quickly or covers a large area (more than one square meter), or if there's a persistent musty odor, the growth may be behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection using a moisture meter can identify hidden dampness within the walls. Remediation would then require removing affected tiles and grout to address the root cause, followed by applying a antimicrobial sealant to prevent recurrence. |
