How to permanently stop mold in a windowless Dubai bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah Park villa has no window and after every shower, the steam just hangs in the air for ages. I’ve been noticing tiny black spots starting to form in the grout between the tiles near the ceiling, and the musty smell is getting worse despite cleaning. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from spreading for good in our humid climate?

The most effective way to permanently stop mold in a windowless bathroom is to control the humidity that feeds it. In Dubai's climate, this requires a consistent, multi-step approach.
Start by running an exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower. If your current fan is weak or loud, replace it with a higher-capacity model. Wipe down all wet surfaces—walls, tiles, glass—with a squeegee immediately after use; this removes the main water source. For the existing mold on grout, a paste of baking soda and vinegar or a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner can scrub it away. Never use bleach, as it only bleaches the surface mold and doesn't kill the roots, which will grow back. For a long-term solution, a dehumidifier is critical for a sealed room. A small, electric desiccant dehumidifier can run continuously to pull moisture from the air, even with the AC on. This is often the only permanent fix for condensation in such spaces. If the musty smell persists or the mold returns quickly despite these measures, the growth may be behind the tiles or in the ceiling void. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and borescope cameras can identify the hidden extent. For severe or recurring cases, remediation by an IICRC-certified firm is necessary to properly remove the contaminated materials and treat the area with antimicrobial solutions to prevent regrowth. |
