How to permanently stop mold in Dubai's humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I keep finding behind the dresser in their bedroom. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this after the recent humidity. I’ve wiped it away twice but it keeps coming back. What’s the most effective way to permanently stop this mold from growing back in our climate?

Black mold growth behind furniture is extremely common in Dubai's climate, especially in older villas in coastal areas like Jumeirah. The high humidity, combined with condensation from year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold on cooler exterior walls. Simply wiping it away will not stop it from returning, as the spores are airborne and the root moisture issue remains unaddressed.

To permanently stop it, you must first identify and control the moisture source. Move the dresser away from the wall to improve air circulation. Check for and seal any tiny cracks in the wall or window frame that might be letting in humid air. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line can raise indoor humidity levels. Running a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months, can help measurably reduce the ambient moisture that mold feeds on.

For a surface that has been repeatedly contaminated, cleaning with a diluted vinegar solution or a dedicated mold-cleaning product can be more effective than just water. However, this only addresses the visible growth.

Given that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms and the mold recurs after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness within the wall itself that you cannot see. The most definitive solution often involves corrective measures like applying an anti-mold primer and paint to the affected wall to prevent regrowth. For health-related cases, a lab test to identify the mold species can provide clarity on potential irritants.
