How to permanently stop mold in humid JLT closet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that keeps coming back in our master bedroom closet. We live in a high-rise in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, and even after I wiped it all down last month, it’s already back on the walls and our leather bags. I run the AC constantly but the closet still feels damp. What’s the most effective way to stop this for good, especially in our humid climate?

The recurring mold in your JLT closet points to a persistent moisture source that simple wiping can't address. In Dubai's high humidity, closets on exterior walls are common condensation points, especially with constant AC creating a temperature differential.

First, identify the moisture source. Check for a leaking AC condensate drain line or a seepage issue from the building envelope—common in high-rises. Move leather items and anything else susceptible to damage out immediately; mold will ruin them.

To manage the environment, leave the closet doors open to improve air circulation. If there's a vent in the room, ensure it's fully open and unobstructed. A small, standalone dehumidifier placed inside the closet can help, but it's a temporary measure. For a more integrated solution, ask your building's facility management to check the AC unit's balance and ensure it's dehumidifying the space correctly, as improper pressure can cause localized humidity.

The most effective permanent solution is to have a professional inspection. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source of the hidden dampness, which is often behind the walls. Remediation then involves correcting the moisture issue, treating the affected areas with antimicrobial solutions, and potentially applying a mold-resistant coating. For a case this persistent, a lab test of the mold can also be wise to identify the species, which informs the best remediation protocol.
