How to permanently stop mold in humid Jumeirah villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that keeps coming back in our master bedroom closet, especially on the leather shoes and bags we store in there. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and even after I cleaned it with bleach last winter, it came back worse this summer. What's the best long-term solution to keep the humidity out and stop this for good?

Bleach only removes surface mold and doesn't address the moisture source, which is why it returns stronger. In Dubai's high humidity, closets on exterior villa walls are prime spots for condensation. The leather items themselves are organic material that mold feeds on.

The long-term solution requires controlling humidity and airflow. Start by removing all stored items and thoroughly cleaning the closet with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. A professional inspection can identify if the issue is localized condensation or a more significant hidden leak, which is common in villa construction here.

For permanent prevention, install a standalone dehumidifier in the room or a smaller rechargeable desiccant unit inside the closet itself. Ensure the closet isn't overpacked and that air can circulate; leave space between the wall and your storage. For critical items like leather goods, consider climate-controlled storage during the most humid summer months.

The most effective approach is often addressing the room's overall environment. Ensure your AC unit is correctly sized and functioning, as it's your primary dehumidifier. For persistent problems, a professional assessment can measure the exact humidity levels and identify the specific mold species, which is important if children are experiencing respiratory symptoms.
