How to permanently stop mold in Jumeirah Park closet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that keeps coming back in our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah Park. It's on the back wall, behind all our clothes, and I just found a new patch of black spots this morning even though I cleaned it with vinegar a few months ago. What's the best long-term solution to kill this for good and stop the humidity from getting in there?

The recurring mold behind clothes in a Jumeirah Park closet points to a persistent humidity source, likely condensation from an AC supply line or a small leak in the wall. Vinegar only removes surface growth and won't address the moisture allowing it to return.

First, move everything out to fully expose the wall. Check if the cold water supply line for your AC's air handling unit runs through that closet—this is extremely common here and causes constant condensation. Insulating that pipe is a critical first step. Also, inspect the exterior wall for any hairline cracks; Dubai's shifting sands can create micro-fissures that allow humid air to seep in.

For a permanent solution, the wall must be professionally dried and treated. Scrubbing with bleach or vinegar is temporary. The affected drywall or plaster often needs to be removed, the cavity behind treated with antimicrobial solutions, and then rebuilt with mold-resistant materials. Simply painting over it will not work.

Given the child's coughing, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact moisture entry point unseen to the eye. They can also take a tape-lift sample for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which is important for health concerns. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide the specific data needed for an effective remediation plan.

Long-term, ensure the closet door is left ajar occasionally for air circulation and consider a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier inside to manage the micro-climate.
