How to permanently stop mold in shower grout?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been getting darker and black in spots over the last couple of months, even though I wipe it down after every use. We live in a villa in Jumeirah Park and with the humidity lately, it feels like a losing battle. What’s the most effective long-term solution or sealant to stop this mold from coming back for good?

The persistent black discoloration in your shower grout is almost certainly mold or mildew, a direct result of Dubai's high humidity levels. Even with diligent wiping, the porous nature of grout traps moisture, creating an ideal environment for microbial growth.

For a long-term solution, surface cleaning alone is insufficient. Start by having the existing grout professionally cleaned and assessed. If the staining is deep, the grout may need to be removed and replaced. The critical next step is the application of a high-quality, penetrating grout sealer. This creates a hydrophobic barrier that prevents moisture from soaking into the grout lines. Reapply this sealer as per the manufacturer's instructions, typically every one to two years, as it wears down from cleaning.

Beyond the sealant, you must address the bathroom's ambient humidity. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is powerful enough for the room's size and that it runs for at least 30 minutes after each shower. If humidity remains high, a standalone dehumidifier can help. For villas, the underlying issue is often insufficient ventilation; an assessment can determine if your extractor system is underperforming or if ductwork needs cleaning.

If the problem recurs quickly after a thorough cleaning and sealing, or if you notice a musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify if there's a hidden moisture source or a more resistant mold species that requires targeted remediation. In many cases, correcting the ventilation and maintaining a sealed grout line is the most effective defense against recurrence.
