How to permanently treat and prevent bedroom mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa always feels damp, and we’ve started finding small black spots along the bottom of the wardrobe that backs onto the exterior wall. This has been an issue since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I clean it, it seems to come back. What’s the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from returning for good?

The black spots are likely mold caused by condensation, a very common issue in Dubai's humid climate when warm, moist air meets a cooler surface—like an exterior wall cooled by your AC. Simply cleaning the visible mold won't stop it, as the root cause is the damp environment.

First, address the moisture source. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to reduce extreme differences between the wall's temperature and the room's air. Run the AC's dry mode frequently to actively remove humidity. Improve air circulation around the wardrobe; even pulling it a few inches away from the wall can make a significant difference. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid night hours.

For the existing mold, clean the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can damage materials. For porous surfaces like drywall or wood, the mold may have penetrated deeply.

Permanent prevention requires fixing the underlying condensation issue. This often involves improving the wall's insulation or its vapor barrier, which may be a construction-level solution. For a persistent problem in a villa, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact cause—whether it's a specific thermal bridge in the wall, insufficient insulation, or even a hidden plumbing leak. They can perform a moisture mapping assessment and recommend targeted remediation, which is more effective than repeated surface cleaning.
