How to permanently treat and prevent bedroom wall mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has a persistent damp patch on the bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. I pulled the furniture out yesterday and found a bunch of black mold spots, and I'm worried it's from all the humidity we've had this summer. I want to get it cleaned properly but I’m more concerned about it just coming back. What's the most effective way to treat this mold for good and what steps should we take to stop the dampness from returning in the first place?

Based on your description of a persistent damp patch and visible black mold growth behind a wardrobe in Jumeirah, this is a classic case of condensation-induced mold, exacerbated by the UAE's high humidity and constant air conditioning use. The wall behind large furniture becomes a cold spot with poor air circulation, allowing moisture from the air to condense and create the perfect environment for mold.

For permanent treatment, the process must be technical and systematic. First, a professional inspection is critical to determine the mold species and the full extent of the contamination, as what is visible is often just the surface manifestation. Remediation involves isolating the area with containment barriers, using HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to clean the air, and then physically removing the mold-infested materials. The underlying wall structure must then be treated with EPA-approved antimicrobial agents, not just bleach or DIY solutions, which only remove surface discoloration and do not address the root cause or the mycotoxins.

To prevent recurrence, you must eliminate the moisture source. This involves improving ventilation behind the wardrobe, potentially by moving it slightly away from the wall. A professional assessment of your AC system is also essential; it may be set too cold, causing excessive condensation, or may require servicing to improve its dehumidification function. Applying a specialized moisture-resistant coating to the treated wall can provide a long-term barrier.

For a situation like this in a villa, we strongly recommend a certified inspection to ensure it is handled safely and effectively. Our teams at Saniservice are trained in Dubai Municipality guidelines for mold remediation and can provide a permanent solution.
