How to prevent AC mold from returning in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I’ve found a patch of black mold on the back wall and on some of my shoes. I got a company to clean it and fix the leak last week, but I’m already worried it’s coming back because the damp, earthy smell hasn't gone away. What’s the best long-term solution to stop this from happening again, especially with our humid summers?

The persistent smell indicates that mold spores and moisture remain in the structure, not just on the surface. For a long-term solution, you must address both the root moisture source and the residual contamination.

First, verify the AC leak repair was complete. In Dubai’s climate, even a minor, intermittent condensate drain blockage can cause recurring dampness. The unit may need a full inspection of its drip pan, drain lines, and insulation.

The wall itself is now the primary concern. Surface cleaning often fails because mold grows into porous materials like drywall and concrete. The affected section likely requires professional remediation: physical removal of contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to address the roots of the colony that you cannot see.

To prevent recurrence, focus on environmental control. Ensure the closet has adequate air circulation; consider leaving the door ajar or installing a vent. Using a small, standalone dehumidifier in such a confined, moisture-prone space can be very effective. For the AC unit itself, a strict maintenance schedule is essential. This includes a professional deep clean of the entire system—not just the evaporator coils but also the drip pan and drain lines—before the peak summer humidity sets in.

In severe cases where the problem persists, a company with its own microbiology lab can test to identify the exact mold species and provide data-driven remediation protocols, which is the most reliable way to ensure the problem is resolved for good.
