How to prevent bathroom mold in Dubai's humidity?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black with mold, especially in the corners. It's gotten noticeably worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, even though we run the exhaust fan. I'm tired of constantly scrubbing it with bleach. What's the most effective long-term solution to prevent this from happening again, especially something that works in Dubai's climate?

Black mould in bathroom grout is common in Dubai due to high ambient humidity and condensation from temperature shifts between the air-conditioned interior and the humid exterior. The most effective long-term solution addresses both the moisture source and the material's susceptibility.

First, verify your exhaust fan's actual performance. It should move enough air to clear steam quickly; hold a single sheet of toilet paper to the vent—if it doesn't hold firmly, the fan may be underpowered or the duct blocked. Run it for at least 30 minutes after each shower. Keep the bathroom door open to improve air circulation and prevent trapped, humid air.

For the grout itself, surface cleaning with bleach often only removes the visible colour, not the root structure. The porous nature of grout allows mould to penetrate deeply. Professional mould remediation for bathrooms often involves applying a specialised antimicrobial coating to the cleaned grout lines. This creates a non-porous, protective barrier that prevents regrowth.

In severe, recurring cases, the issue may be behind the tiles. Constant moisture can degrade the waterproofing membrane, leading to mould growth in the wall cavity. This requires a professional inspection with a moisture meter to assess the integrity of the substrate. If compromised, the only permanent fix is to redo the shower's waterproofing, a standard requirement under Dubai building codes for wet areas.
