How to prevent black mold from returning after cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. I had the AC serviced last month but it didn't help. What's the most effective long-term solution to prevent this mold from coming back after I clean it?

Black mold recurrence is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use. The most effective long-term solution requires addressing the moisture source and improving ventilation.

First, identify and fix the water source. Since it's behind a wardrobe against an exterior wall, it's likely condensation from the AC or a small seepage issue. Move the furniture away from the wall to allow air circulation. Check for cracks in the wall or faulty external sealant that might allow humid air in. Ensure your AC unit is not set too cold, as a very low temperature creates a greater temperature differential, leading to more condensation on walls. Maintaining an indoor temperature around 22-24°C can help reduce this effect.

After cleaning the mold with a specialist antifungal solution, apply a mold-resistant primer before repainting. This creates a barrier that discourages regrowth. Use a dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid winter months, to keep relative humidity below 60%.

For a persistent problem, a professional inspection is recommended to rule out hidden leaks within the wall or improper AC drainage. The condensate drain line from your AC should be checked to ensure it is not blocked and is properly discharging water away from the building's structure. In many villas and older buildings, this is a primary cause of hidden moisture. A thorough assessment can pinpoint the exact cause that a standard service might miss.
