How to prevent black mold in a windowless closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom’s walk-in closet, which doesn’t have any windows, has started to get a really damp, earthy smell, especially on the back wall where we keep our shoes and bags. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black speckles forming in the corner near the baseboard. I’m worried it’s the start of black mold, especially with the humidity lately. What’s the most effective way to stop this from spreading and prevent it for good in a sealed room like this?

Black mold thrives in the stagnant, humid conditions common in sealed Dubai closets. The damp smell and black speckles near the baseboard are strong indicators of a moisture problem.
Immediately move all items away from the affected wall to improve air circulation. Wipe down the speckles with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning agent, but this is only a surface fix. The core issue is high humidity. For a sealed room, you must introduce airflow and control moisture. Run a small, portable dehumidifier inside the closet for several hours each day, emptying its tank regularly. Alternatively, leave the closet door open and use a standing fan to circulate air from the air-conditioned bedroom into the space after showers or during high-humidity periods. Ensure your bedroom's AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a faulty unit can significantly raise indoor humidity. For long-term prevention, consider installing a louvered door to allow passive air exchange or having a small ventilation grille installed in the closet wall to let stagnant air escape into the AC return flow. If the speckles return quickly or spread after cleaning, the moisture source may be hidden, like a small plumbing leak in the wall or condensation within the AC ducts. In these cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and borescopes is needed to find the root cause, as continuous dampness behind walls will always lead to regrowth. |
