How to prevent black mold in Dubai bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Arabian Ranches has started getting a fuzzy black mold on leather bags and shoes. It seems to get worse every winter, especially after those cooler, damp nights. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help in that enclosed space. What's the most effective way to prevent this mold from coming back every year, should I be using a dehumidifier or something else specifically for the closet?

The fuzzy black mold on your leather items is a classic sign of condensation issues, very common in Dubai's winter. Cooler nights cause the outside villa walls to drop in temperature. When the warm, humid indoor air from the AC enters the closet and hits that cold wall, it condenses, creating the damp environment mold thrives in. The enclosed space prevents proper air circulation, so the AC can't effectively manage humidity there.
The most effective prevention is a two-part strategy: reduce humidity and increase air movement inside the closet. A small, portable dehumidifier placed inside the closet is highly effective. Empty it daily. Also, ensure air can circulate; avoid over-packing the closet and consider leaving the door ajar for a few hours each day. For a more permanent solution, a professional can assess if adding a small ventilation duct from the AC system directly into that space is feasible. Since this is a recurring issue on an external wall, a professional inspection is recommended to check for hidden insulation gaps or micro-cracks in the wall that are exacerbating the cold surface problem. They can use thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact condensation points. For the current mold, have the affected leather professionally cleaned to prevent spores from regerminating. |
