How to prevent black mold return in humid Dubai weather?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold I just found growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. We live in a ground-floor villa in Jumeirah and it’s been incredibly humid lately. What is the most effective long-term solution to stop this from coming back after I clean it, especially with our damp weather?

Black mold recurrence in Dubai's humidity requires addressing both the moisture source and improving air circulation. First, identify and repair any water intrusion—check for leaks from pipes, windows, or the roof, and ensure your villa's external drainage is moving water away from the foundation walls. Ground-floor locations in areas like Jumeirah are particularly susceptible to rising damp from the soil.

After the visible mold is properly remediated, control indoor humidity. Use a dehumidifier to keep levels below 60%, and run exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms. Ensure your AC unit is functioning correctly—it's your primary dehumidifier. Have it serviced to confirm it's effectively removing moisture from the air and that there's no mold growth inside the unit or ductwork itself.

Improve airflow in the problem area. Rearranging furniture to allow air to circulate along that wall is crucial; a sofa pressed against it traps moist air. For persistent issues, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture within the wall cavity using thermal imaging or moisture meters, which is common in villas here. They can also apply antimicrobial coatings after remediation to inhibit future growth on the surface. The long-term solution is always controlling the moisture, not just cleaning the mold.
