How to prevent closet dampness and mold on clothes?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get a really strong damp smell. I pulled out my winter clothes last week and found a few of my jackets have dark spots on them. I run the AC constantly but it's obviously not enough. What's the most effective way to stop this from happening again, like a specific dehumidifier or something else I should put in the closet?

Closet dampness in Dubai is almost always due to high humidity and condensation, not a leak. The interior wall location suggests the cold surface from the adjacent air-conditioned room is meeting the humid air inside the closet, creating condensation that soaks into the wall and your belongings. Running the AC constantly lowers overall humidity but creates cold surfaces where moisture can still condense if air circulation is poor.

First, improve air circulation immediately. Leave the closet doors open for several hours each day and consider installing louvered doors if possible. Do not store clothes in plastic bags, as this traps moisture; use breathable fabric garment bags instead. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) inside the closet can help, but it's a temporary fix for a larger issue.

For a permanent solution, the wall itself needs addressing. The condensation is likely occurring inside the wall cavity. A professional inspection can identify if additional insulation or a vapour barrier is needed to prevent the cold bridge effect. They may also use a thermal camera to pinpoint the exact condensation points.

Before storing any clothes back, they must be professionally cleaned to remove the mould spores, and the closet should be wiped down with a mould-inhibiting solution. For cases where visible mould is already on walls or items, lab testing is recommended to identify the species, as this dictates the appropriate remediation method to prevent it from returning.
