How to prevent closet moisture causing black spots?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting these black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored in there. I first noticed it a couple of weeks after the heavy dew season started, and it’s definitely worse in the early mornings. I’m worried it’s spreading to the walls. Besides cleaning it, what’s the best long-term solution to stop the moisture from coming back into the closet itself?

The black spots are likely mold growth caused by condensation forming on the cold exterior wall, a common issue in Dubai's climate. The heavy dew season dramatically increases outdoor humidity, which then penetrates and condenses on cooler interior surfaces.
First, move all leather goods and other items away from the external wall to a drier location. For the affected items, gently wipe the mold off with a soft cloth slightly dampened with a diluted vinegar or soap solution, then allow them to dry completely away from the closet. The long-term solution requires addressing the condensation source. Ensure the closet door is left slightly ajar to allow your room's air conditioning to circulate dry, cooled air inside. This is critical, as stagnant air in enclosed spaces creates a high-humidity microclimate. Check that your AC unit is functioning correctly and set to a consistent temperature; significant temperature swings can worsen condensation. If the wall is consistently cold and damp to the touch, the room's insulation may be insufficient for our extreme humidity. Applying anti-condensation or thermal insulation paint to that specific wall can create a barrier, raising its surface temperature to prevent moisture from forming. For persistent issues where the mold is spreading to the wall itself, a professional inspection is recommended. An expert can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact condensation levels and identify if there's a more serious hidden leak or insulation flaw. In many cases, installing a small, standalone dehumidifier or a dedicated ventilation duct leading into the closet from the AC system provides a permanent fix. |
