How to prevent closet moisture damaging leather items?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get these black speckles on the leather shoes and handbags we store in there. We run the AC constantly but it feels damp inside, especially since the recent humidity. What’s the best way to keep the moisture out and protect our stuff—should I get a dehumidifier box or is there a better solution for a small enclosed space like this?

Closet moisture damaging leather in Dubai is a common issue driven by our high humidity and constant AC use. The AC lowers the air temperature, but if the closet is on a cooler interior wall, the warm, humid air entering the space can cause condensation, creating a microclimate perfect for mold. Those black speckles are very likely mold spores.

For a small enclosed space, a commercial dehumidifier box or silica gel desiccants can help, but they are a temporary measure. They will absorb some moisture from the air inside the closet but won't address the root cause, which is the air exchange and temperature differential. You'll need to recharge or replace them frequently.

The most effective solution is to improve air circulation. First, try leaving the closet doors open for a few hours each day to allow the room's conditioned air to circulate inside and balance the humidity. If that's not feasible, a small battery-operated closet dehumidifier that runs a quiet fan can help move stagnant air. Ensure your leather items are clean, conditioned, and stored in breathable fabric bags, not plastic, which traps moisture.

Since you already see mold growth, the items and closet should be professionally inspected. In the UAE, mold on interior walls can sometimes indicate a deeper condensation issue within the wall cavity or a slight negative pressure drawing humid air in. A certified inspection can identify the species to confirm it's a surface mold and use moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the dampness before it affects your home's structure.
