How to prevent closet mold in humid Jumeirah weather?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting a black, powdery mold on leather bags and shoes since the weather changed. We run the AC constantly, but the closet feels damp and the musty smell is really strong when I open the doors. What’s the most effective way to stop this moisture from building up in there specifically?

The dampness and black powdery mold in your closet are classic signs of condensation, a common issue in Jumeirah villas. The outside wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the villa's interior cool air meets the exterior's high heat and humidity, causing water vapor to condense on surfaces inside the closet. Running the AC constantly lowers the air temperature but doesn't address the stagnant, humid air trapped in that enclosed space.

Start by improving air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar for several hours each day to allow conditioned air from the room to flow through. If possible, install a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or a moisture absorber like silica gel packs inside. For a more permanent solution, a technician can often adjust your AC ducting to include a small vent directed into the closet space, which will supply dry, cooled air directly.

Inspect the exterior wall for any cracks or compromised seals that might be allowing humid air to infiltrate. The leather items themselves are holding moisture; clean them with a solution recommended for mold on leather and store them elsewhere until the humidity issue is resolved. The strong musty smell indicates the mold has likely spread to the closet's walls or backing material. Surface cleaning will only temporarily remove the visible growth.

For a problem this persistent, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and the extent of the mold growth behind surfaces. They can use thermal imaging to pinpoint the condensation on the cold bridge and recommend remediation, which may include sealing the wall or improving insulation. In many cases, the underlying cause requires targeted intervention beyond general AC use.
