How to prevent closet mold in humid UAE climate?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started getting a white, fuzzy mold on leather bags and shoes stored inside. It’s been humid lately and I’m worried it’s from lack of airflow, even though we run the AC constantly. What’s the most effective way to prevent this mold from coming back for good—should I use a dehumidifier, silica gel packets, or something else specifically for our UAE climate?

Closet mold in UAE villas is common due to the high ambient humidity, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah. Running AC constantly helps but often isn't enough for enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets. The white fuzzy growth is likely a surface mold feeding on organic materials in the leather.
First, address the current growth. Wipe affected items and interior surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Dry everything thoroughly before returning items. For leather, a professional cleaner may be best to prevent damage. For long-term prevention, improve airflow and reduce humidity inside the closet. Leave the closet doors ajar for several hours each day to allow conditioned air to circulate. Avoid overpacking the closet, as cramped conditions restrict airflow. Check that the room's AC vent isn't blocked by furniture, directing cold air towards the closet can help. A small electric dehumidifier is the most effective solution for a persistent problem. Place a compact unit inside or near the closet to maintain humidity below 60%, the threshold where mold struggles to grow. Silica gel packets are useful for very small, sealed spaces like boxes within the closet but are ineffective for the entire closet volume in our climate. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, the issue might be more systemic. Hidden moisture from a small condensation leak in the wall or under the floor can be the source. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the hidden problem that DIY methods can't solve. |
