How to prevent closet mold in humid villa AC?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting small patches of black mold on the leather bags and shoes we stored there. It seems to have gotten worse since the weather became more humid, and we run the AC constantly. What's the best way to treat the items we have and, more importantly, how can we stop the condensation from happening in the first place?

The mold growth in your Jumeirah villa closet is a classic symptom of condensation, exacerbated by Dubai's high ambient humidity and the constant cooling from your AC unit. The cold outside wall acts as a thermal bridge, chilling the interior closet surface. When the warm, humid air from the rest of the house enters this cooler space, it rapidly cools, causing moisture to condense on the wall and your stored leather goods, creating the perfect environment for mold.

For immediate treatment of your items, carefully wipe the mold off the leather with a soft cloth slightly dampened with a water and mild soap solution. Allow the items to dry completely away from the closet, but never in direct sunlight as this can damage the leather. For porous items, professional cleaning may be required to prevent spore regrowth.

To prevent recurrence, the underlying condensation issue must be addressed. First, improve air circulation within the closet. Leave the closet doors ajar and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Ensure that the AC vents are not directly blowing cold air onto the closet, and verify that your AC system's drainage is functioning correctly and not contributing to indoor humidity. For a permanent solution, the thermal bridging of the external wall should be professionally assessed. Remediation may involve improving the wall's insulation or applying anti-condensation coatings.

Given the persistence of mold in our climate, a professional inspection is highly recommended to identify the precise moisture source and extent. Our certified experts at Saniservice use thermal imaging and moisture meters to diagnose these issues accurately and provide a targeted remediation plan.
