How to prevent damp smell in sealed bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has started to get a weird, damp smell, especially on the leather bags and shoes I store in there. We had the windows sealed during the summer to keep the heat out, but I’m worried the lack of airflow is causing hidden mold. I’ve wiped down the walls but the smell comes back. What’s the most effective way to control humidity and prevent this in a closed closet space without having to run a dehumidifier 24/7?

Based on your description of the Mirdif villa and the recurring damp smell on leather goods, this is a classic case of elevated humidity leading to microbial growth, likely mold, within an enclosed space. The combination of Dubai's high ambient humidity, a sealed room, and organic materials like leather creates a perfect environment for this issue.

The most effective strategy is not just treating the symptom (the smell) but controlling the root cause: humidity. First, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Wiping down visible surfaces is insufficient, as mold can proliferate within wall cavities, under flooring, or on the back of shelves due to condensation from temperature differentials. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify hidden saturation points that are not visible to the naked eye.

For prevention, passive ventilation is key. Consider installing louvered doors or small, discreet ventilation grilles to allow for air exchange. Utilize moisture-absorbing products like silica gel desiccant bags or calcium chloride-based dehumidifiers (e.g., DampRid) inside the closet; these are highly effective and do not require power. Ensure your villa's AC is properly maintained and running consistently, as it is the primary dehumidifier for your home. Keep a small gap between stored items and the walls to facilitate air circulation.

For a confirmed mold issue, DIY cleaning is not advised as it can exacerbate spore dispersal. Professional remediation involving containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial application is necessary to resolve it safely and permanently.
