How to prevent mold from returning in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold, as I just found some black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because the room shares a wall with the bathroom. I’m really worried about their health and want to stop this from coming back after I clean it. What’s the most effective way to prevent mold from growing back in our bedroom, especially with the high humidity here?

Mold in bedrooms is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC units. To prevent recurrence, you must control moisture and improve ventilation.

First, identify and fix the moisture source. Since the wall shares a bathroom, check for leaks from pipes, showers, or poor grout sealing. Ensure the bathroom exhaust fan is working properly and run it during and for 20 minutes after showers. Keep the bathroom door closed to contain humidity.

Use a dehumidifier or run your AC continuously to maintain indoor humidity below 60%, the level where mold struggles to grow. Clean AC filters monthly, as dirty filters reduce airflow and cause condensation. Ensure furniture, like your wardrobe, is not pushed tightly against external walls, as this creates stagnant, humid air pockets where mold thrives.

For the existing mold, simply wiping visible spots is insufficient. Non-porous surfaces can be cleaned with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, but porous materials like drywall or wood often require professional remediation to remove spores embedded deep within.

After cleaning, consider applying an anti-microbial coating to the area to inhibit future growth. The most definitive solution is a professional inspection to identify hidden moisture and mold, as the visible spots are often just a small part of the problem. A lab analysis can also confirm the mold type, which is important for understanding potential health impacts, especially with children experiencing respiratory symptoms.
