How to prevent mold from returning in humid bedrooms?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the last couple of weeks, and I finally checked behind their bedroom dresser. There's a patch of black mold on the wall, probably from our AC unit's condensation. We live in a villa in Jumeirah Park and I'm desperate to stop this from coming back after I clean it. What's the most effective long-term solution to control humidity and prevent mold in our bedrooms?

Condensation from AC units is the primary cause of mold in Dubai bedrooms, especially on exterior walls where cold meets humid outdoor air. The most effective long-term solution is controlling humidity at its source and ensuring proper ventilation.
First, address the immediate problem. The visible mold on the wall is likely just the surface manifestation; the hyphae (root structure) can penetrate porous materials like drywall. Scrubbing it with a bleach solution is a temporary fix. For a recurring issue, the wall cavity may need professional assessment to check for deeper colonization. To prevent its return, focus on reducing relative humidity. Keep your AC running consistently, even when you're out, to maintain a stable temperature and avoid condensation cycles. Set the thermostat to a slightly higher, yet still comfortable, temperature (e.g., 23-24°C) to reduce the extreme differential that causes condensation. Ensure bedroom doors are left open to allow for proper air circulation throughout the villa, preventing stagnant, humid pockets. For a targeted solution, have your AC system inspected. The drain line might be clogged or the drip pan faulty, causing excess moisture. A UV-C light installed inside the AC unit’s evaporator coil compartment can help inhibit microbial growth within the system itself, preventing it from blowing spores into the room. In villas, improving room ventilation is key. Use exhaust fans in en-suite bathrooms during and after showers for at least 30 minutes. For severe, persistent humidity, a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom can mechanically extract moisture from the air, keeping levels below the 60% RH threshold where mold thrives. If the cough persists after a surface clean, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use a moisture meter to identify hidden dampness in walls and conduct air or swab sampling to identify the mold species, which is crucial for understanding health risks and ensuring the remediation protocol is effective. |
