How to prevent mold in a dark closet without windows?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Arabian Ranches has a walk-in closet that doesn't have a window, and ever since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago, I’ve started finding small black spots on a couple of my leather handbags stored in the back. I run the AC constantly but it’s not enough for that enclosed space. What’s the most effective way to control moisture in a dark closet like this to prevent the mold from coming back?

The most effective method is to install a small, standalone dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant unit inside the closet. For a small, enclosed space, a compact electric dehumidifier or a renewable silica gel unit can maintain the ideal 50-55% relative humidity level, making it impossible for mold to grow.

Since the space is dark and unventilated, the AC's dehumidifying effect won't reach it. First, have the mold on the bags professionally assessed to confirm it's not a harmful species. Then, clean all surfaces inside the closet with a solution designed to remove mold spores. The key is continuous moisture control; a small device running constantly is far more effective than any one-time cleaning. In Dubai's climate, this is a permanent solution for any enclosed storage area. For persistent issues, a professional inspection can identify if there's a hidden moisture source, like condensation from a nearby AC duct, which is common in villas here.
