How to prevent mold in a Dubai storage room?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our villa in Jumeirah has a small storage room under the stairs with no windows. I opened it yesterday to get out the suitcases and noticed a few small black specks on the leather and a really strong damp smell, even though nothing in there got wet. I’m terrified of this turning into a full-blown mold problem like my friend had in JVC. What’s the best way to completely prevent mold from growing in a closed-off, dark storage space here in Dubai’s humidity?

The black specks and damp smell in your Jumeirah storage room are clear indicators of a developing mold issue, driven by Dubai's high ambient humidity. Preventing it requires controlling moisture and airflow in that enclosed space.
First, address the humidity source. In a sealed room, the dampness is likely from condensation as humid air cools on walls and leather surfaces. Install a small, plug-in dehumidifier and set it to maintain humidity below 55%, the threshold where mold growth is significantly inhibited. A humidity meter (hygrometer) is essential to monitor this. For a small, windowless room, a mini electric dehumidifier is more effective than disposable moisture absorbers. Second, create airflow. Keep the door ajar occasionally to allow air from your home’s air-conditioned environment to circulate, which helps equalize temperature and reduce condensation. If possible, run a small USB fan inside the space for a few hours a week. For the existing growth, clean the leather suitcases with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated leather cleaner, then allow them to dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area before returning them. Wipe down all walls and surfaces in the storage room with a microfiber cloth. If the musty smell persists or you see the specks return after cleaning, a professional inspection is warranted. They can use a moisture meter to identify hidden condensation points and perform air or surface sampling to identify the mold type, which dictates the remediation protocol. This is a common issue in Dubai villas, and catching it early, as you have, prevents a larger problem. |
