How to prevent mold in a Dubai walk-in closet?« Back to Previous Page

My walk-in closet in our Jumeirah apartment constantly feels damp, and after pulling out my winter clothes, I found several jumpers with black speckles on them. We run the AC all the time, but it doesn't seem to help this enclosed space. What's the most effective way to prevent this mold from coming back every season? Should I get a specific type of dehumidifier or is there a better solution for our humid climate?

Mold in a Dubai walk-in closet is almost always a humidity and ventilation issue, not just a cleaning one. The constant AC use in the rest of the apartment can actually create a cold, stagnant pocket in the closet where warm, humid air from the bathroom or outside condenses, especially on exterior walls in Jumeirah.

Start by improving airflow. Leave the closet door open as often as possible and consider installing a small, quiet exhaust fan or a louvered door to encourage circulation. Ensure there's a gap between your clothing and the walls; never pack items tightly. Use moisture-absorbing products like silica gel desiccant packs or a calcium chloride-based dehumidifier tub placed discreetly on a shelf, which are more effective for small, enclosed spaces than electric units.

For the existing mold, wash salvageable clothes with a mold-killing solution. Discard heavily affected items to prevent spores from spreading. Wipe down all closet surfaces with a diluted white vinegar or specialist cleaner, but this only addresses visible growth.

The most effective long-term solution is to address the root cause. A professional inspection can identify if the issue is due to a lack of vapor barriers in the building envelope, plumbing leaks, or negative air pressure pulling humid air into the space. In many cases, installing a dedicated, properly sized dehumidifier for the room or having your AC system assessed to ensure it is adequately dehumidifying the entire apartment is the definitive fix. For persistent problems, a mold test can identify the species and concentration to guide the remediation strategy.
