How to prevent mold in a Dubai wardrobe long-term?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall has started getting black fuzzy mold spots, especially on our leather bags and shoes. We’re in a Jumeirah Park villa and it’s been so humid since the weather changed. I run the AC constantly but it’s clearly not enough to stop it in this enclosed space. What’s the best long-term solution to kill the existing mold and prevent it from coming back inside the wardrobe itself?

First, remove all affected items and clean any mold off the wardrobe surfaces with a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner. For porous items like leather, a professional cleaner is best to prevent damage. The goal is to remove the visible growth immediately.

The core issue in a Dubai villa is the high ambient humidity, especially on an outside wall, which creates a significant temperature differential and leads to condensation inside the wardrobe. Running the AC constantly lowers the room's temperature but can actually worsen this "cold spot" effect in an enclosed, unventilated space.

For a long-term solution, you must address both moisture and air circulation. Install a battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like those containing calcium chloride crystals) inside the wardrobe. These are essential for pulling excess moisture from the enclosed air. Also, avoid packing items tightly; leave space for air to move. Leave the wardrobe doors slightly ajar for a few hours each day to allow the room's conditioned air to circulate and equalize the humidity.

If the problem is persistent or the mold growth is extensive (covering more than a few square feet), the moisture source might be more complex, such as a minor insulation issue in the external wall. In these cases, a professional inspection with thermal imaging can identify the exact condensation points. Remediation companies with their own microbiology lab can also test the mold to confirm the species, which guides the most effective removal protocol and ensures it is addressed comprehensively.
