How to prevent mold in a humid closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Mirdif has been great, but since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, I keep finding small patches of black mold in the corners of our walk-in closet, especially on the leather bags and shoes we have stored in there. I’m running the AC constantly, but it’s not enough. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in a closed storage space like this to prevent it from coming back?

The black mold patches you're seeing in your Mirdif villa closet are a classic symptom of the high humidity levels we experience in Dubai, particularly during the summer months. The enclosed space of a walk-in closet, combined with organic materials like leather, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold when humidity exceeds 60%. Running the AC is a good first step, but it often isn't sufficient for poorly ventilated, enclosed spaces.

For immediate and effective control, you must physically lower the humidity level within that specific space. I recommend installing a compact, powerful dehumidifier designed for small areas. This is a non-negotiable first step. Secondly, improve air circulation. If the closet has an AC vent, ensure it is fully open and unobstructed. If not, consider leaving the closet door ajar for several hours a day and using a small oscillating fan to move stagnant air. For your leather goods, use moisture-absorbing silica gel packs inside the bags and shoe boxes; these are far more effective than traditional baking soda.

Before treating the visible mold, a professional inspection is highly advised to confirm the species and ensure safe remediation. For recurring issues, the root cause may be a slight positive pressure or condensation within the wall cavity itself, which requires expert diagnosis.
