How to prevent mold in a humid master bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa gets really humid, and last week I spotted a patch of black mold in the corner behind the wardrobe. We had a company come and clean it, but I’m so worried it’s just going to come back. What’s the best long-term solution to control the humidity in that specific room to prevent this from happening again?

Black mold recurrence is a common issue in Dubai villas when only the visible growth is removed without addressing the underlying humidity source.

For a specific room like your master bedroom, start by identifying the moisture source. The high outdoor humidity, often above 80%, can infiltrate the room. Check that your AC is correctly sized and functioning; an undersized unit will run constantly without adequately dehumidifying the air. Ensure all windows and doors are properly sealed to prevent humid outdoor air from entering.

A dedicated dehumidifier is the most effective direct solution for a problematic room. Run it in the bedroom, especially during the more humid night-time hours, aiming to maintain indoor relative humidity below 60%. After showers, ensure the bathroom door is closed and the exhaust fan is running for at least 30 minutes to prevent steam from migrating into the bedroom. Consider moving the wardrobe slightly away from the external wall to improve air circulation behind it, as stagnant air in corners invites condensation.

For a permanent fix, a professional inspection is advised to assess the room’s envelope and AC system. They can perform diagnostic tests to pinpoint the exact humidity pathways and may recommend solutions like improving insulation on cold walls where condensation forms or integrating a whole-house dehumidification system with your AC. Verifying that the remediation company used proper antimicrobial agents on the affected area is also crucial, as simple cleaning often leaves microscopic spores that will quickly regrow.
