How to prevent mold in a sealed Dubai storage cupboard?« Back to Previous Page

My apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been feeling so humid lately, and I just pulled out my winter clothes from the storage cupboard to find several jumpers with dark greenish mold spots. This is the second time this has happened in a year, even though I used those silica gel packets. I’m worried the lack of air circulation in that cupboard during the humid months is the culprit. What’s the most effective way to prevent mold from coming back in a sealed storage space here in Dubai?

The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold in stagnant, sealed spaces like cupboards. Silica gel packets are insufficient for JVC's climate; they become saturated quickly and can't remove existing mold spores.

Start by addressing the current infestation. Remove and wash affected fabrics with a mold-killing solution. Wipe down the entire cupboard interior with a mixture of white vinegar or a diluted bleach solution to kill surface mold. Allow it to dry completely.

For long-term prevention, you need to control humidity and air circulation. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant like calcium chloride bags (which absorb more moisture than silica gel) is essential. Place a hygrometer inside to monitor humidity, aiming to keep it below 60%.

Improving air circulation is critical. Leave the cupboard door ajar for a few hours each week to allow air to flow. If possible, install a small louvered vent on the door to promote passive ventilation. Storing items in plastic airtight containers provides a secondary barrier against spores and moisture.

For recurring issues, a professional inspection can identify if the problem is localized or a symptom of higher ambient humidity in the apartment, which might require broader dehumidification strategies.
