How to prevent mold in a windowless Dubai wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha has been feeling really humid lately, and I just found some black spots in the corner of our walk-in wardrobe where we store our winter clothes and luggage. The room doesn’t have a window and the AC vent is on the other side, so it doesn't seem to get much air circulation. What's the best way to get rid of this and keep it from coming back, especially with the summer humidity coming?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Al Barsha villa, the issue is a classic case of localized high humidity and poor air circulation, exacerbated by Dubai's climate and the lack of a window. The black spots are likely active mold growth, which requires immediate and correct action to prevent further spread and potential health issues.

First, address the active growth. For a small, contained area, carefully clean the affected surfaces with a microfiber cloth dampened with a solution of detergent and warm water. Do not use bleach, as it only discolors the mold and does not kill the roots. After cleaning, the area must be thoroughly dried. Given the confined space and the porous nature of building materials, I strongly recommend a professional inspection to confirm the extent of the infestation. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify hidden moisture sources that are not visible to the naked eye.

For prevention, the core strategy is moisture control and air movement. Install a compact, powerful dehumidifier inside the wardrobe, setting it to maintain humidity below 50%. This is non-negotiable for a sealed space. Additionally, a small, battery-operated circulating fan should be run for several hours a day to disrupt stagnant air. Ensure the AC vent is fully open and unobstructed; consider having your HVAC system inspected to confirm it is properly dehumidifying the air. Store items in plastic sealed containers, not cardboard boxes or fabric bags, which absorb moisture. Regularly inspect the space and leave the wardrobe door ajar when possible.
