How to prevent mold in AC-cooled Dubai bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has been feeling really damp lately, especially since the weather started getting hotter and we've been blasting the AC non-stop. I just pulled back the wardrobe that's against the exterior wall and found a patch of black mold growing on the back of it and a faint musty smell. We want to get it professionally inspected and treated, but more importantly, how can we prevent this from happening again after the cleanup, especially with our humid climate?

The dampness is likely condensation from your AC unit battling Dubai's high external humidity. To prevent recurrence after professional remediation, focus on reducing moisture and improving airflow.

First, ensure your AC is correctly sized and maintained. An oversized or poorly serviced unit cools the air too quickly without adequately dehumidifying it, leaving excess moisture. Have a technician check that the condensate drain line is clear and the evaporator coils are clean. Set your AC to a consistent, moderate temperature—around 22-24°C is often sufficient. A very low setting can cause more condensation on cold surfaces like exterior walls.

Crucially, improve air circulation around that wardrobe. Move it at least two to three inches away from the exterior wall. This allows air to flow behind it, preventing cold spots where condensation and mold thrive. Consider using a small, energy-efficient dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid summer months.

For the inspection, look for a provider that uses a moisture meter and thermal imaging to identify the exact source of the dampness—whether it's condensation, a tiny leak, or rising damp. A proper inspection should include air and surface sampling sent to an independent microbiology lab to identify the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. This scientific approach ensures the problem is solved at its root.
