How to prevent mold in closet from humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Marina apartment has started getting these black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored over the summer. I’ve noticed it gets worse whenever the humidity spikes, even with the AC running. What’s the most effective way to control the moisture in a closed space like this to prevent the mold from coming back?

The black spots are likely mildew or mold feeding on the organic material in your leather goods. Marina apartments are highly susceptible to this due to the high ambient humidity, which can easily reach 85% or more, and the constant temperature differential between cooled rooms and warmer wall cavities, leading to condensation inside closets.

Start by removing all items from the closet and cleaning the affected leather with a specialist leather cleaner. Wipe down the entire interior of the closet—walls, ceiling, and shelves—with a diluted white vinegar solution. Ensure the closet is completely dry before returning items.

To prevent recurrence, you must manage the moisture. A standalone dehumidifier is the most effective solution for a closed space. Place a small electric desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet and run it continuously; it will need to be emptied regularly. Silica gel desiccant packs are a passive option but are less effective for the high humidity levels in Dubai and require frequent reactivation in an oven.

Improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar when possible. If there's a vent in the room, ensure furniture isn't blocking airflow to that area. For severe, recurring issues, the problem may be a deeper condensation point within the wall. A professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera can identify these cold spots where moisture is accumulating unseen. In many cases, the most permanent solution involves addressing the underlying condensation issue, not just the surface mold.
