How to prevent mold in closet in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall has started getting these black speckles on my leather bags and shoes, and it’s definitely worse since the weather got more humid. I’m in an older building in Bur Dubai and I run the AC constantly, but it doesn't seem to be enough. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from coming back and damaging my stuff?

The black speckles are a classic sign of a surface mold colony feeding on the organic materials in your leather. Bur Dubai's older buildings often have less insulation, and the inside wall your closet is on is likely cooler than the room's air temperature. This creates a condensation point, especially with high outdoor humidity seeping in. Your AC, while running constantly, may be cooling the air but not adequately removing the moisture, which is the real fuel for mold.
First, move your affected items to a dry, sunny area to prevent further damage and clean them with a leather-safe disinfectant. For the closet itself, wipe down all surfaces with a diluted vinegar or certified mold-cleaning solution. This addresses the existing growth but not the cause. To prevent recurrence, you must control humidity and air movement. A standalone dehumidifier placed in the bedroom is the most effective immediate action; aim to keep relative humidity below 60%. Improve ventilation by leaving the closet doors open as often as possible and using a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside it. Ensure nothing is pushed tightly against that outside wall, as this traps cool, stagnant air. For a permanent solution, the underlying issue must be diagnosed. The condensation on that wall suggests a significant temperature differential, potentially from inadequate insulation or a hidden leak. A professional inspection using a thermal camera can identify these cold spots and moisture intrusion points that are invisible to the naked eye. Resolving that is the only way to stop it long-term. |
