How to prevent mold in closet on exterior wall?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet, which is on the wall facing the outside of our villa in Al Barsha, has started getting a weird black speckling on my leather bags and shoes. It’s been getting worse since the weather turned more humid a couple of months ago. I’m constantly running the AC but it doesn’t seem to be enough for that one corner. What’s the most effective way to stop this moisture from getting in and prevent the mold from coming back for good?

The black speckling is likely mold growth caused by condensation forming on the cooler exterior wall, a very common issue in Dubai villas, especially during the more humid months. The wall acts as a thermal bridge, staying colder than the room's air, which allows moisture to condense behind your items.
First, move all items away from that wall to allow air to circulate. Wipe down all affected surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, and thoroughly clean your leather goods to prevent spores from regrowing. To prevent its return, you need to control the humidity at that cold surface. Improve air circulation inside the closet by installing a battery-operated dehumidifier or a small, quiet USB fan to keep air moving. Ensure your bedroom's AC is running consistently, as this is your primary dehumidifier. For a more permanent solution, consider having a professional add insulation to the interior side of that exterior wall to raise its temperature and prevent condensation from forming in the first place. If the problem is extensive or keeps returning despite these measures, a professional inspection can identify the severity of the growth and any hidden moisture issues within the wall cavity. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact problem and recommend a targeted remediation and prevention plan. |
