How to prevent mold in Dubai closet with dehumidifier?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started getting these black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there, and there's a constant damp smell no matter how much I clean. We had that really humid spell a couple of weeks ago and it's been a problem since. I run the AC but it doesn't seem to be helping the closet area. What's the most effective way to prevent this mold from coming back, like a specific dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can put inside the closet?

The most effective approach combines moisture control with improved airflow. Start with a compact electric dehumidifier designed for small spaces; look for one with a humidistat that automatically maintains humidity below 60%, as this is the critical threshold for mold growth. Desiccant-based moisture absorbers (like those with calcium chloride crystals) can supplement this but are less effective in Dubai's high humidity and require frequent replacement.

For a closet, improving air circulation is equally important. Leave the closet doors ajar for a few hours daily to allow your room's AC to circulate dry, conditioned air into the space. Storing items with a small gap between them and the wall also prevents stagnant, humid pockets from forming.

Since the issue began after a humid spell, the source may be condensation from an exterior wall or a minor, hidden leak. Wipe down all surfaces with a vinegar solution to remove the existing mold, but this is only a temporary fix without addressing the moisture source. For persistent problems, a professional inspection can identify if the wall itself has elevated moisture levels, which is common here and requires a different remediation strategy.
