How to prevent mold in Dubai closets with AC?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed a few small patches of black mold on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I noticed it after the recent humidity spike, and even though I got rid of the affected items, I'm terrified it's just going to come back. What's the most effective way to prevent mold from growing inside closets here in Dubai, especially with our AC running all the time? Should I get a dehumidifier box or are those moisture absorber bags enough?

The humidity spike you noticed is the core issue. Dubai's climate, especially during summer, creates ideal conditions for mold in enclosed spaces like closets on interior walls, where cool AC air meets warmer surfaces and causes condensation.

First, address the source. Wipe down the entire closet interior with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, not just bleach. Ensure the room's AC vent isn't blocked by furniture and that air can circulate into the closet; leave the door ajar for a few hours each day. For leather goods, condition them regularly as dry, porous material is more susceptible.

Moisture absorber boxes or bags can help in a small, sealed closet, but they are a secondary measure. For a walk-in or larger closet, a small electric deshumidifier is more effective at maintaining a consistently low humidity level, which is the real goal.

If the mold returns persistently despite these measures, a professional inspection is warranted. There could be a hidden leak in the wall or an issue with the AC unit's drainage causing excess moisture that you cannot see. A proper inspection includes moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the exact source, which is crucial for a permanent solution.
