How to prevent mold in Dubai seaside closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a weird, damp smell, especially on the outer wall that faces the sea. I pulled out some winter clothes I stored a few months ago and found a few of my jackets have small black speckles on the inside. We run the AC constantly, but the humidity here is just something else. What’s the best way to prevent this mold from coming back once I’ve cleaned everything?

The damp sea air in Jumeirah creates a perfect storm for mold, as high humidity meets cool interior walls, causing condensation. Prevention requires managing both moisture and airflow.

First, address the condensation on that outer wall. Ensure there's a gap between the wall and your stored items; never push clothing or boxes directly against it. Using wire shelving instead of solid wood allows air to circulate behind your belongings. A moisture-absorbing product like silica gel packs or a small renewable desiccant tub placed discreetly in the closet can help reduce the ambient dampness that attracts mold.

Your AC is your primary weapon, but it must be set correctly. Keep it running on "dry" or "auto" mode to actively remove humidity from the air, even when cooling isn't needed. Ensure the closet door is left slightly ajar periodically to allow dehumidified air from the room to circulate inside and prevent stagnant, moist air from being trapped.

For a more permanent solution, inspect the exterior wall for any micro-cracks or compromised sealant that might be allowing moisture ingress from the salty air. Sealing these points is crucial. If the problem persists or you find more than just superficial speckling, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture within the wall cavity that requires remediation. In many cases, they use thermal imaging to find these cold spots and condensation sources that aren't visible to the naked eye.
