How to prevent mold in Dubai wardrobe closets?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has a built-in wardrobe on an interior wall, and I’ve just found a bunch of black spots on the leather jackets and bags I had stored inside. It must be from the humidity, especially after the recent foggy mornings. I’m gutted because some of these items are ruined. What’s the most effective way to prevent mold from growing inside closets here in Dubai?

Mold in Dubai wardrobes is a common issue due to the high ambient humidity and constant air conditioning creating significant temperature differentials. The most effective prevention strategy involves controlling moisture and ensuring adequate air circulation.

Start by installing a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) inside the wardrobe. This is crucial for absorbing the excess moisture that condenses on cooler interior walls. Ensure your wardrobe is not pressed tightly against an exterior wall, as this is where condensation most often forms; leave a small air gap if possible.

Maintain consistent air conditioning, as it dehumidifies the air. Avoid turning the AC completely off for extended periods, especially during the humid summer months. Clean your AC unit’s filters regularly, as a clogged filter reduces its dehumidification efficiency. For leather goods, condition them before storage and store them in breathable garment bags, not plastic, which traps moisture.

For valuable items that are already affected, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent. In many cases, specialized cleaning can salvage them. For the wardrobe itself, a thorough cleaning with a vinegar solution can remove surface mold, but addressing the root moisture cause is essential to prevent its return.
