How to prevent mold in humid Jumeirah apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold spots I just found behind the dresser in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because the dresser was pushed right up against the wall. We’re in a ground-floor apartment in Jumeirah that feels a bit humid. What’s the best long-term solution to keep the mold from coming back after I clean it, especially with our humidity?

The black mold spots behind your dresser are a classic sign of condensation and stagnant air, especially common in ground-floor apartments in Jumeirah where humidity is high. The long-term solution requires controlling moisture and improving air circulation.

First, address the humidity source. Your air conditioner is your primary dehumidifier. Ensure it's set to a consistently cool temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to effectively remove moisture from the air. Running it on "dry mode" for a few hours each day can significantly help. Have your AC unit serviced regularly to confirm the drain line is clear and the system is operating efficiently.

Next, improve ventilation. After showering or cooking, run exhaust fans for at least 30 minutes. Most importantly, keep furniture like your dresser at least two to three inches away from the wall. This allows air to circulate behind it, preventing cold walls from developing condensation spots that mold feeds on. A small hygrometer from a hardware store can help you monitor indoor humidity; aim to keep it below 60%.

For the existing mold, a simple cleaning with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution can remove the visible growth. However, since your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, the underlying issue may be more extensive. Mold can spread behind baseboards or within wall cavities. A professional inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air testing, can identify the full extent to ensure remediation is complete. In Dubai, remediation companies should follow DM and DHA guidelines for post-remediation verification to confirm the environment is safe.
