How to prevent mold in my closet this summer?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started getting these black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I noticed it a couple of weeks ago and it's getting worse, even though the rest of the apartment seems fine. I'm worried it's because we keep the AC on all the time and maybe there's no airflow in there. What's the best way to prevent mold from growing in my closet during this humid summer?

Black spots on leather in a closed closet are a classic sign of a micro-climate with high humidity and stagnant air, which is common here. The constant AC creates a temperature difference between the cool room and the warmer, still air inside the closet, leading to condensation that mould spores thrive on.

First, address the immediate problem. Remove all affected items and clean them according to the manufacturer's instructions to prevent further spread. For the closet itself, wipe all interior surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning product. Allow everything to dry completely before returning items.

To prevent recurrence, your goal is to equalize temperature and increase airflow. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar whenever possible. If the closet has an AC vent inside, ensure it's fully open and not blocked by clothing. If it doesn't have a vent, consider installing a battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber like silica gel packs inside. For a more permanent solution, a small, quiet USB-powered fan placed inside can dramatically improve air circulation.

For long-term storage, avoid using airtight containers or plastic bags, as they can trap moisture. Opt for breathable fabric storage bags instead. If the problem persists or you see mould returning on the walls themselves, the issue may be deeper within the building envelope. In that case, a professional inspection with moisture meters can identify a hidden condensation or leak issue that needs to be resolved.
