How to prevent mold in my cold, humid closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah, is constantly cold from the AC. I’ve just pulled out my winter clothes and found several of my favorite jackets covered in black and green fuzzy spots. This happened a little last year, but it's way worse now after the recent humid weather. What’s the most effective way to stop this moisture from building up and ruining my things?

Condensation forms in cold closets on exterior villa walls when humid Dubai air meets the cold surface, creating a perfect environment for mold. The most effective strategy is to manage both the temperature and the humidity in that enclosed space.

Start by increasing air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar for a few hours each day, or install a small, battery-operated moisture absorber with a replaceable desiccant tablet inside. For a more permanent solution, a technician can adjust your AC vents to ensure some conditioned air flows into the closet, preventing the drastic temperature difference that causes condensation. Never store damp or slightly damp clothes, as they will introduce moisture directly.

For your current situation, the moldy jackets need proper cleaning. Brush off the mold outdoors to avoid spreading spores indoors, then dry clean them or wash them in hot water if the fabric allows. Visually inspect the closet walls, ceiling, and floor for any visible mold growth. A mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution can clean small areas on non-porous surfaces.

If the mold growth is extensive, has penetrated the wall (like drywall), or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify if there's a more significant humidity issue or a hidden source of moisture. In many Dubai villas, the problem is a lack of a proper vapor barrier in the external wall construction, which can be diagnosed with a thermal and moisture imaging survey.
