How to prevent mold in my Jumeirah apartment closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get these black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored in there, and it’s definitely mold. It’s the interior wall that faces the outside, and this is the second time it’s happened since last winter. What’s the best way to treat the items and, more importantly, how can I stop the moisture from building up in that specific closet for good?

That black mold on leather in a Jumeirah closet is a classic sign of condensation on a cold interior wall, a very common issue here. The wall facing the outside is chilled by year-round AC, and our high humidity condenses on its surface, creating a perfect environment for mold.

First, treat the items. For leather goods, wipe them down with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water. Dry them thoroughly in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, before storing them again. Do not put them back until the root cause is fixed.

To stop the moisture for good, you need to manage the temperature and humidity differential. Start by ensuring the closet is not overcrowded; allow air to circulate around the wall. Leave the closet door open for a few hours each day. A small renewable desiccant dehumidifier (like those silica gel units) placed inside the closet can help absorb excess moisture.

The most effective solution is often to improve insulation. Since this is a recurring issue on an exterior wall, the wall itself may be acting as a cold bridge. A professional assessment can determine if applying internal insulation or a thermal barrier paint to that specific wall is necessary to prevent the condensation from forming in the first place.

For a persistent, recurring problem, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact source of the moisture and the mold species. They can use thermal imaging to pinpoint the cold spots and moisture meters to confirm the levels, providing a targeted solution rather than a temporary fix.
