How to prevent mold in my Jumeirah Village closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah Village apartment has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on my leather bags and shoes. It's been getting worse over the last few weeks, and I'm worried about my clothes getting ruined. I run the AC constantly, but it doesn't seem to help the closet area. What's the most effective way to prevent mold from growing in there, like a specific dehumidifier or a particular cleaning routine?

That damp smell on leather goods is a classic sign of a mold-friendly microclimate in your closet, likely due to Dubai's high humidity and the temperature differential created by your AC. The constant cooling creates condensation in less-ventilated spaces, which is a perfect breeding ground for mold spores that are always present in the air.

First, address the immediate problem. Remove all items from the closet. Wipe down all interior surfaces—walls, shelves, and the floor—with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Leather items need special attention; wipe them down with a leather-safe disinfectant and allow them to air dry completely away from the closet before returning them. Do not put anything back until the closet is bone dry.

For prevention, you need to manage humidity and air circulation. A compact, portable dehumidifier is one of the most effective tools for a closet in this climate. Place a small desiccant-type dehumidifier inside the closet; these are quiet, require no plumbing, and will actively pull moisture from the air. Also, improve air flow. Leave the closet doors open for a few hours each day and consider installing a small, battery-operated vent fan if the space is completely sealed. Never store damp or even slightly moist clothing or shoes inside.

If the smell persists after a thorough cleaning and these preventative measures, the issue may be more extensive. Mold can grow inside the drywall or behind baseboards if there's a hidden condensation point or a minor leak. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the exact source of the moisture, which is essential for a permanent solution.
