How to prevent mold in my master bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has been getting patches of black mold on the leather bags and shoes I have stored in there. It’s worse after the humid summer, and I run the AC constantly. I’ve cleaned it twice now but it keeps coming back. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in a closed closet space to prevent this for good?

The recurrence of black mold on your leather goods in an interior closet is a classic symptom of a localized humidity problem, exacerbated by Dubai's extreme climate. Running the AC constantly lowers the overall apartment temperature, but a closed, unventilated closet on an interior wall becomes a micro-environment. The cold wall surfaces from the adjacent air-conditioned room cause warm, humid air that seeps in to condense, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold.

The most effective control strategy is a multi-pronged approach. First, you must address the condensation point. Improve air circulation within the closet by installing a battery-operated humidity-activated exhaust fan or leaving the door ajar periodically. Second, actively control the moisture load. Use a renewable desiccant like silica gel inside the closet, ensuring you recharge or replace the units as directed. For a more permanent solution, a small, plug-in electric dehumidifier designed for small spaces is highly effective.

Crucially, cleaning the visible mold is not enough. The hyphae (root structures) penetrate porous materials like leather and the closet walls themselves. A professional hygienization using specialized biocides is required to eradicate the colony at its source, not just the surface spores.

Given that the problem is persistent, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified experts use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact condensation points and hygrometers to measure the closet's specific humidity levels. This allows us to design a targeted, permanent solution. Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for mold remediation to ensure it is handled safely and effectively.
