How to prevet mold in Dubai villa closet long-term?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting these black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I store in there. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I wipe it down, it comes back. What’s the most effective long-term solution to prevent this mold from recurring in a Dubai villa?

The black speckles are classic mold growth, almost certainly fueled by high humidity trapped in an enclosed space against an exterior wall. In Dubai's climate, that exterior wall is likely a "cold bridge" where the villa's air-conditioned interior meets the hot, humid outside air, causing condensation inside the wall cavity that migrates into your closet.
Wiping it away only addresses the surface symptom. The long-term solution requires controlling the moisture source. First, improve air circulation immediately. Keep the closet doors open as much as possible and consider installing a small, battery-operated humidity absorber or a compact, low-energy dehumidifier inside. Ensure your villa's AC is running efficiently and that the room's vents are not blocked, as consistent cooling helps remove moisture from the air. For a more permanent fix, the wall itself needs investigation. The condensation issue may require professional assessment to identify if insulation within the wall cavity is compromised or missing, creating the cold surface where water condenses. Remediation often involves accessing the area to install proper vapor barriers and insulation to break the thermal bridge. Finally, any moldy items like leather goods must be professionally cleaned to remove spores, or the mold will simply regrow from them. For persistent problems hidden inside walls, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is the most effective way to locate the exact moisture source and plan a targeted repair. |
