How to professionally remove black mold in bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally pulled back the cabinet under the sink and found a ton of black mold spreading up the wall. It's been so humid lately that the window doesn't seem to help at all. What's the best way to get this professionally cleaned and treated to make sure it doesn't come back?

Black mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. The first step is to stop the moisture source. For an apartment, this often means a leaking pipe or seal behind the cabinet. A professional inspection should identify the exact water source, as treating the mold without fixing the leak guarantees its return.

For extensive growth found behind cabinets, professional remediation is strongly advised. The process involves containment to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms, physical removal of contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation, and HEPA vacuuming of all surfaces. The area is then treated with antimicrobial solutions. In many cases, simply wiping with bleach or vinegar is ineffective on porous surfaces and doesn't address the root cause or hidden growth.

Post-remediation, a humidity meter (hygrometer) can help monitor levels. To prevent recurrence, run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it vents outside, not into the ceiling void. Wiping down wet surfaces and fixing any AC drain line issues also helps control moisture. For verification, some companies provide before-and-after surface or air samples processed through an accredited lab, which is the only way to confirm the species and that spore levels have returned to normal.
