How to properly inspect and fix bedroom wall mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall facing the marina. I'm really worried it's mold, especially with the high humidity we've been having. What’s the best way to get a proper inspection done to find the source of the moisture and make sure it doesn't come back after cleaning?

That pattern on your exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai, especially during humid periods. The exterior wall facing the marina is likely cooler from the constant AC, causing warm, humid air to condense behind the wardrobe where airflow is restricted. This trapped moisture creates the perfect environment for mould.
For a proper inspection, start by moving the wardrobe to expose the entire area. Wipe a small area with a paper towel soaked in diluted bleach; if the discoloration lightens, it's likely mould. The inspection's real goal is to find the moisture source. Check for cracks in the external wall render or failed sealant around windows that could be letting in humid air. The constant temperature difference between the cooled interior and the hot, humid exterior is a primary culprit. While you can clean small patches yourself, a professional inspection is recommended for recurring or larger areas (over a square foot) to prevent it from returning. A proper assessment uses moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint exactly where and why condensation is forming within the wall cavity, which is often invisible to the naked eye. The fix is rarely just surface cleaning; it typically involves correcting the underlying humidity and temperature imbalance, improving ventilation behind the unit, and sometimes adding insulation to the interior wall to prevent the cold surface where condensation occurs. For verification, a lab analysis can identify the mould type, which is useful for health context, but the moisture diagnosis is more critical for a permanent solution. |
